The North West Mesemb Show

Twelve galleries below show images from the last 12 Mesemb Shows.

Mesembs grow in habitat in Southern Africa and are classified under hundreds of genera. Whilst Lithops and Conophytums are the most well known, and most often grown genera, there are are many more suitable to grow in collections in this country. All Mesembs grow by producing opposing pairs of leaves each year and usually (but not always) grow towards the latter end of our summer season.

The North West Mesemb Show was created in 1986 by Mid-Cheshire Branch by members who had a keen interest in Mesembs in general. The initial idea of the show was suggested by Alan Hart, after reading the very first issue of the MSG Bulletin. Ray Allcock was asked to produce a schedule to suit such a specific show and he spent many hours collating information about growing habits, groups of plants and much other important information.

Gradually, through the early years of the first decade in the 21st century it became obvious that Mid-Cheshire Branch was in irreversible decline and that they did not have the manpower to keep putting on the show, the last one being held in Northwich in 2005.

To save the show Manchester Branch stepped in and the show is now held, since 2007, annually in October at our usual branch meeting venue. The show still attracts exhibitors and enthusiasts from all over the north west (and beyond).
