Newsletters

Newsletter History.

Reproduced below are copies of all the newsletters that the branch holds in the archive. As can be seen we have quite a number of them. They have been scanned and converted to PDF by Chris Leather. This has been an ongoing project for over 10 years. Chris has also labouriously converted every single newsletter into word documents and produced three volumes in nice clear text.

The Newsletter books are ready. We hope to have the books ready for sale for the September Meeting. Please contact Chris if interested. The books cost £38 for a set of three (including p&p).

Whilst some may consider the newsletters to be ephemeral and not worth reading Chris likes to think they are actually quite valuable in terms of our branch history. They give us a glimpse into our branch past, for most of us now “before our time” and offer an opportunity to hear voices from the past. Staggeringly the total word count comes in at over 300,000 words – yes that is right THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND words! That is an amazing amount of content from the various authors and editors who were all creating the newsletters in their spare time. In reading the newsletters we see that many things have changed, but also many topics were as relevant then as they are now.

The earliest newsletters we know about were edited by Mr. and Mrs. Harper in 1964. There is a report in the Journal Newsletter (March 1965) saying that Mr. and Mrs. Harper had seen the newsletter through it’s first year. This was all we knew about them until three issues turned in 2015 from the collection of Austin Fitzjohn, Secretary to the branch in the 1960’s. The editors were Colin and Carole Harper and the newsletters are two foolscap pages stapeled together at the top. Issue 1 has a detailed account of the early history of the branch.

Also in the archive are seven issues of Mancunian Cactivities. The paper copies in the archive have also come from the collection of Austin Fitzjohn. The editor in this case was Les Nyman, but it appears that the first issue is Vol 1, #1 with no mention of the newsletters from 1964. All issues run into a double figure page count, and have articles about potting mixes, watering regimes and recent shows and nursery visits. There is an article by Colin Partington and one by Harold Gaulton. Gordon Rowley and Brendan Burke had previously kindly lent copies of the first six issues, so that they could be scanned for our website. Whether there are any more issues from late 1967 onwards we do not know.

No information is known about any newsletters from the 1970’s. Can you help, please?

Moving into the 1980’s there were five newsletters issued, edited by Les Pearcy. Les has kindly donated copies for our website. These issues are A5 in size and contain 12 or 16 pages. For a long time I had a reference to Peter and Judith Schofield being editors of the newsletter in 1988, 1989 and 1990. A set of 16 newsletters from January 1988 through to June 1989 came to light when sorting through the collection of books belonging to the late Geraldine Dyson. There may still be newsletters from July 1989 through to 1990 and would welcome copies if anyone has them.

Once we reach the late 1990’s the editor became Peter Bint. This newsletter was A4 in size. We hold 18 newsletters in total, from two sides of A4, upto bumper issues with ten pages. We have copies from July 1997 to December 1999.

Into the 2000’s and the editor was Ivor Crook. The newsletter was named Gaultonia after our much missed President Harold Gaulton. This again was an A4 sized document usually with several pages. Ivor also produced the bumper 60th Anniversary issue that contains a very detailed report of the branch history written by Peter Bint and several member profiles. John and Sylvia Jones edited the newsletter between 2009 and 2011 with most issues being in full colour. From 2012 onwards the newsletters have been edited by Peter Bint once again, latterly with help from Chris Leather, and are A5 in size.

Please feel free to download and read the newsletters. If you would like PDF copies of all of them please save time and ask Chris as he would be more than willing to send them in bulk. Please also see Chris if you would like copies of the books mentioned above. They are sold at cost price + p&p and are a wonderful addition to any cactus & succulent library.

We donated to Sheffield Branch a small number of Sheffield newsletters that can be viewed here: Sheffield Newsletters

There is also a booklet produced by the Bolton and District Cactus Society. Several of the Manchester members also attended Bolton meetings and contributed to the booklet. Twenty-One
